The Gamers Dorkness Rising (2008) 6

This movie is a descent into the subculture of Role Playing Gamers and as one of these gamers, I find the whole treatment a delightful comedy.

This is going to become one of those “must see” movies for gamers right along side such classics as Monty Python’s quest for the Holy Grail, and The Princess Bride for both sheer fun as well as a gold mine of inappropriate quotes to throw around during subsequent game sessions.

I’m rating this movie a 6 out of 7 with some reticence because this is going down as one of my favorite movies of all time. But in the end, and despite the advances in inexpensive special effects, The Gamers is still a relatively low budget movie, and in many scenes this is brutally obvious. So I’m rating this as a 6 purely for cosmetic reasons. In spite of this minor qualm the story is well crafted, well told, and the humor (though not terribly unique to gamers) is refreshing and new for those unfamiliar with the RPG subculture.

This movie features cunning product placement (the countless cans of “Mountain Doom” soda) and allusions to more gaming references than you could think possible. Of added delight are the cameo appearances and features of all of the former actors from the original The Gamers feature.

So far, I’ve seen this movie twice, and I’m planning on adding this one to my collection.
